Now that the European League is on recess....

The last series of football matches in major leagues across Europe were concluded this last Sunday and it has been a relatively short season. League titles were won across the major leagues by the favorites, Chelsea, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and PSG. Also the race for European Golden boot was also by the favorite. My team finished just exactly where they have consistently finished in the last 10 years, garnered enough point just to make it to Europe next season.

On June 6, 2015, the last and arguably the most important match of the season will be played in Berlin with Juventus locking horns with FC Barcelona in a much contested run to the final of the Champions league. The big question on the minds of billions of soccer fans is one thing, what would our weekends look like for the next two months.

Football remains the most followed sport in the world with an estimated 3 billion viewers having watched the 2010 World Cup Final. The religion of watching league matches over the weekend has been a constant ritual for a lot of people. Last year, the void was filled in by the 2014 Brazil World Cup and at least two-thirds of the soccer holiday was engaging with the thrills of another world cup. The emptiness of the coming weekends is already brewing and soccer lovers need to find something to occupy their time before August. Here are some things you can do during these two months of ‘empty weekends’.
  • Spend more time with family – In Nigeria, the the primary and secondary   school holiday apparently coincides with the end of the European league season. This is a perfect time to hang out with the kids, probably schedule various kid engaging activities for the weekend.
  • Religious Activities – Quite a number of people would rather spend time watching their football club play than attend religious programs, maybe it’s the time to reconsider and at least spend the next two months helping out with various activities in your religious organization.
  • Cook – A huge percentage of soccer lovers are men and the weekends simply is for sports. Why not try cooking a daddy’s meal for the family and for the bachelors, you can try to learn how to cook something new.
  • Diversify – There are tons of other engaging things on TV, you can try to pick an interest in another sport or even another TV program.
  • Learn a new skill – We spend hours watching soccer and in as much as we do enjoy it, this ‘empty weekends’ can be used to learn a new skill – writing, dancing e.t.c.
And if any of these doesn’t fancy your interest, just wait till the 12th of June, 2015 and let’s watch Messi, Neymar and Suarez light up the 2015 Copa America.
