This has got to be the joke of the century. What is it with
statues in South Africa? First it was the statue of Cecil Rhodes in University
of Cape Town now it's Mandela's in University of Pretoria? Mandela though?
According to Banana Newsline, thousands of students from the
University of Pretoria marched to the Union Buildings and demanded that Nelson
Mandela’s statue be removed.
“The traitor must go,” they chanted,
as they covered the statue with black refuse bags.
“Madiba sold our people out when he
negotiated with the whites,” explained Thoko Tsetste, who instigated the
protest. “It’s because of him that white farmers still have land.”
“Mandela wanted reconciliation,” he
continued. “We’ll give it to him. We will reconcile his statue to the scrap
yard, rabbit ear and all.”
The mob circled the defenceless
statue, swirling in a uniform chaos, and launched a second wave of assault.
Defenceless statue indeed! Statues have just been added to
the many problems of the African Nation. I think as young people we must understand
the difference between making a statement and making a noise. And we must also
know how to make serious statement without sounding stupid. The issue with the
Rhodesmustfall protest was about "institutionalized racism" they
said. And yes that is something really serious because it affects a large
number of students. However, attempting to say something serious with a bad
joke distorts the seriousness of the message. Now what is the issue with
Madiba’s statue?
Please stay happy and spread happiness around. Xoxo.
